Rory

The Inn on the Right was the complete opposite to the one next door. There were cracked windows, chipped steps leading up to the door, missing roof tiles, and rubbish strewn across the driveway. The whole building was in desperate need of love and attention, and Rory could clearly see why the local kids referred to the hotel as haunted.

What the hell happened to this place?

His eyes rolled over the premises, then towards the shiny, clean, well-looked-after hotel on the other side of a tall dividing fence.

Muffled laughter could be heard coming from inside the derelict building, and flashing torchlights flittered across window panes every so often.

Rory’s gut told him that Jamie was inside, and when an empty bottle of cider was thrown out of the opened doorway and landed at his feet, he figured Jamie was probably drinking too.

Well, I guess my chat with him went in one ear and out the other.

He really thought he had got through to the lad as well. They had chatted for ages, and Rory had explained how much trouble Jamie would be in if he was caught breaking and entering. Jamie had nodded, paid attention, and agreed, but Rory knew the lad was young and thinking himself a lot smarter than he actually was. Rory knew how to play the game. Nod, agree, and then go and do it your own way.

He nudged the cider bottle with the tip of his boot and glanced over at the doorway.

It was Halloween night, so it was most likely just a bunch of giggling kids inside and not a crim on a job. The place didn’t look as though it had anything worth stealing anyway, and that was just from the outside.

It didn’t look much better inside.

Jesus, it smells like someone died in here and the corpse is still hanging around. Go into the light, my friend. You do not want to stay in this stuffy old place. Look at the state of it in here. This is supposed to be a hotel? A working hotel until recently? It couldn’t have been. Someone’s got their dates muddled. It doesn’t look as though it has seen a guest in years. Unless folk stay here for that haunted experience. I don’t know what the owner was thinking. It can be a haunted house without being dirty. My God, how thick is that dust? Is it any wonder kids would come here for Halloween.

He walked over to the reception desk and eyed the small selection of chocolate bars that had been dumped there. He picked up a Mars Bar, unwrapped it, and bit off a large chunk.

Might as well.

There were doors everywhere and a staircase leading upwards. He walked towards the broken banisters and glanced up. A roar of laughter caused him to notice a stairway leading downstairs behind an opened doorway.

A huge kitchen that looked as though it hadn’t served any food in years was occupied by a group of teenagers drinking cider, giggling loudly, and throwing prawn cocktail crisps at each other.
